ABOUT

Out of Easy Reach is a cross-institutional exhibition hosted by DePaul Art Museum, Gallery 400 at UIC, and the Rebuild Foundation, guest curated by Allison Glenn, Associate Curator, Contemporary Art at Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art. Out of Easy Reach explores how American artists from the Black and Latinx diasporas who identify as women are using various forms of abstraction to navigate, respond to, and embrace the contemporary world.

Out of Easy Reach considers how artists from two generations have been informed by those before them; addressing the crisis of visibility of women of color within the narrative of abstraction’s history. Through the work of 24 artists, a broadened understanding of the freedom and impact of moving beyond binary thinking, beyond the body, and beyond the expectations of representation—emerges. Featuring work made from 1980 to the present, Out of Easy Reach presents myriad ways artists working in Chicago, New York, Los Angeles, New Orleans, Atlanta, Austin, and Puerto Rico employ abstraction as a tool to explore personal and universal histories.

Each exhibition venue will feature artists and artworks that are grouped based on thematic affinities, and conceptual pairings will happen throughout.  At DePaul Art Museum, artists and artworks will be presented that consider landscape, the body and the archive.  Gallery 400 will include artists and artworks that are concerned with spatial politics, mapping and migration. Stony Island Arts Bank will feature works that consider process, time and material culture through assemblage practices.
